TestDisk overview

TestDisk download contains TWO programs - TestDisk and PhotoRec. They are used on the command line in the Terminal. As a result, these programs are designed for support personnel and experienced Mac users.

The TestDisk program is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table).

It will also find accidentally deleted partitions (either Apple Partitions, the newer EFI partitions and Windows MBR Partitons) and provide the necessary information for you to restore them using the Apple pdisk command (for Apple Partitions) or the gpt command for (for EFI partitions)

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.

PhotoRec can recover data from various filesystems including FAT, NTFS and HFS+.

Wonderfull program. It says here (sorry im not native english) for experienced users. Yes if it was before Ai. Now let me share my impression. I accidently I presume touched the raid-1 configuration of my Qnap with the button in front and obviuolsy wipe out my library of picture (about 2T). no need to say when i figured out my folders were missing the heartbeat which follow. I immediatly disconnected my Qnap and then search for recovery tool. I came across this one, and i also thought this would be a painfull exercise, but anyway lets give a shot i thought. I decided to run terminal in 4 windows for different non interuption and one for command of the photorec, and one ChatGPT which gives you the prompt to feed the terminal with so it can assign the Photorec correct settings and run. That took 2 days of HDD turning and collecting all data, but the exercise was not as difficult as i feared and I strongly recommend for people like me -not specially experienced with codes and understanding of programming- to use photorec with GPT and Terminal and you are in safe "hands" I collected all my pictures back and it put it in folders called recup_dir.1, dir.2 etc etc (I had 786 folders). For a phootgrapher I strongly recommened to use after ExcireFoto to keep the metadata if you didnt have it previously and recopmpose you library. Last but not least there is a couple of competitor but they use the same mechanism and are not superior, rather opposite afetr few reviews, and cost 70$ at least and per year even for some. This one is free (read: free to reward as it is well deserved!). So dont fear the complexity, take your time and use ai to. support the script in terminal and evrything will go fine:-)

I had to use TestDisk a long time ago, I don't remember exactly what was my issue — I think it was a damaged partition — and TestDisk was my last resort and it worked! So, now, I always have it installed on my computers, should I ever need it again. :-)

I'v used the windows version and it saved my as..Ssss. I had updated the HD firmware, the partition was gone and this utility brought back my files. I've used the browsing mode so I had my important files back in 5 min. No need to scan 5 hours in my case. It's command line based but menu driven so it's quite easy actually. I'v used the beta version 7.

Cannot install on Mac OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks using MacUpdate Desktop. I have posted this question at TestDisk Board URL at: http://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3 and will update this review when it is resolved.
